The Farmyard's very successful Chore Chart Program evolved into an even more in-depth and hands-on livestock education program. Beginning in 2026, Farmyard Friends is going to spearhead these programs, in order to connect more kids with rare breeds and be a deeper part of the local agricultural community. With The Farmyard's help, we have connected with other local farmers who have years of experience, the animals to lease, and an interest in teaching children about their industries. Together, our team is providing workshops, hands-on experiences, and opportunities for children to participate in local fairs and demonstrations.

What is the Animal Leasing Program?
Beginning in late spring 2026, children will be matched to a farm/farmer with their desired species. They will attend weekly, hand-on education classes learning the skills it takes to breed and manage these animals. The program incorporates local exhibitions (such as the Hereford Junior Farm Fair, Baltimore County 4H Fair, Mason Dixon Fair, York Fair, or Maryland State Fair) over the summer, where the child has the opportunity to participate in a live event, showing the animal they have worked with all spring/summer.

FAQs:
What are the age requirements?
We have designed different programs for different age groups. Children as young as 5 may begin with our Guinea Pig or Rabbit Leasing Program. Older ages (until 18) may be matched with a specific species and participate off-site.

What is the time commitment?
Each program is different, but generally a weekly commitment for 8-12 weeks. Please make sure to check with your farmer to identify the dates of any shows. These are typically full-day commitments or more.

What is the cost?
All programs will have an initial fee of $25 will include annual membership as a supporter of Farmyard Friends Learning Center, set-up and admin fees, and a class on site at The Farmyard. Additional Livestock Program costs will be set by the matching farm, and pricing changes according to species, the nature of the program, and the farm providing the services.

Are these programs held at The Farmyard?
Some programs are held at The Farmyard. Certain species (ie. hog, dairy cattle), are held at one of our partnering farms. If a commute is a concern for your family, please let us know and we will coordinate a species that is housed on-site.

Is this a 4-H Club?
No, we are not a 4-H Club, however, some of the exhibitions and activities do require membership to 4H. We are happy to connect your family with a club or an extension agent from your county.

Does my child have to show at the fair?
No, although shows seem to be a highlight for most children, there is no requirement to show. If your child is uncertain if they’d like to show their animals, they are welcome to attend and serve as a helper.
